Electric Gaps in Pulsar Magnetospheres

  • L. Mestel

Abstract

Two contrasting models of the magnetosphere are studied: a classical, quasi-mhd model, in which it is the component E that accelerates electrons to relativistic energies; and a model with e+-e- production, in which the component E is locally crucial, both in an acceleration domain near the star and in a dissipation domain beyond the light-cylinder.
