Invertebrate propagation and re-establishment programmes: The conservation and education potential for zoos and related institutions

Zoos and related institutions such as aquaria and butterfly houses are becoming increasingly aware of the tremendous public interest that invertebrates generate (Robinson, 1991). This recognition is reflected in a growing number of impressive invertebrate exhibits, which in addition to providing visitors with a fascinating introduction to a diverse and important fauna (Rose, 1992), can also play a crucial role in highlighting the many threats facing the majority of the planet’s invertebrate species. Examples of such exhibits are in Cincinnati Zoo (Ross, 1981), National Zoological Park, Washington, DC (Robinson, 1991), Melbourne Zoo (Toone, 1990), Tama Zoo, Tokyo (Yajima, 1991), Artis Zoo, Amsterdam (Veltman and Wilhelm, 1991), Berlin Zoo and Aquarium (Klos and Lange, 1986), London Zoo (Pearce-Kelly et al, 1991)., and a number of excellent butterfly houses (Collins, 1987; Toone, 1990) and aquaria throughout the world.
