Abstract

Oxygenation of arachidonic acid by lipoxygenases in leukocytes to produce the 5-hydroxy-derivatives is accompanied by 15-oxygenation resulting in the production of 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE). This is an important physiologically active product that inhibits the activity of 5-lipoxygenase in neutrophils and of 12-lipoxygen-ase in platelets and is thus part of the complex network of regulatory interactions between the various lipoxygenase pathways.
