Vagal Control of Gastrointestinal Tract during Vomiting
Vomiting is characterized by a complex sequence of activities including salivation, spasmodic respiratory movements, forced inspiration and modifications of gastrointestinal motility. The neural coordinating mechanism for vomiting is located in the lateral reticular formation (1, 2). In addition, there is a separate chemosensitive area, responsible for the initiation of emesis by central emetic agents, and situated on the caudal margins of the fourth ventricle (Area postrema, Chemoreceptor Trigger Zone CTZ) (1, 2). The aim of the present work was to study the nervous efferent pathways involved in the control of the gastrointestinal tract during vomiting.
