Gastrointestinal Contractile Activity Associated with Vomiting in the Dog

Abstract

Vomiting, which seems to be a protective function against ingested noxious materials, is one of the major pathophysiological phenomena in the gut. Gastrointestinal motility associated with vomiting had been studied with using contrast media in the stomach or duodenum (1), or electrodes on the intestine (2). However, mechanical movements during vomiting has not fully been elucidated, especially in the intestine, probably because of technical limitation. Contrast media in the intestine is not useful to follow its movement under fluoroscopy, and the electrical changes detected by electrodes on the intestine do not always reflect the strength of the intestinal contractions.
