Generation of electromagnetic waves
In the last four chapters we have studied the propagation of electromagnetic waves in free space, in dielectrics and in conductors, while ignoring the question of their generation. Now we go back to the inhomogeneous wave equations and their solutions the retarded vector and scalar potentials. We first develop these potentials for the radiant energy a long way from an oscillating electric dipole and then discuss how the radiators of electromagnetic energy at radio and microwave wavelengths (antennas) can be made directional. Finally we consider the classical scattering of electromagnetic waves.
