The Relationship Between Formalised Languages and Natural Language

  • Evert W. Beth

Abstract

I have selected the present topic as it seems to be the one on which contemporary British Analytic Philosophy most strikingly disagrees with related currents in scientific philosophy both on the European Continent and in the United States. This choice does not imply any wish on my part to attack British Analytic Philosophy. In fact, my information about this movement is too fragmentary to justify any such intention. But I do hope that the following observations may elicit a fruitful discussion on some problems of major importance, the more so as the subject in itself is still highly controversial both in Europe and in America.
