Creating New Land: Designing on New Land

  • Artur Glikson

Abstract

It is all too easy to criticize a new landscape and to say that it is good or bad, beautiful or monotonous, and I think different people will react differently when seeing for the first time the landscape of the North-East Polder in the former Zuider Zee. Some of them will say that it is strangely impressive, and others will say that it is unhuman. But I believe that the reason for this vagueness lies in the lack of any scale which would help us to make such evaluations of a regional landscape from the functional and aesthetic point of view. Good and bad must be related to something, and I will try to contribute to the creation of such a scale.
