General Geology and Vertebrate Biostratigraphy of the Dunkard Basin

Abstract

Vertebrate faunal successions in the Appalachian basin can be used to delimit biostratigraphic zones correlable with both Western United States, Noya Scotian and European sections. These zones are correlable with the Westphalian, Stephanian and Autunian of Europe, and the Missourian, Virgilian and Wolfcampian Lower Clear Fork beds of Texas. Although precise placement of the Carboniferous-Permian boundary is not possible, there is general acceptance of the Stephanian-Autunian (Virgilian-Wolfcampian) boundary for the systematic change as well. As good lower Wolfcampian vertebrate faunas are established in the Appalachian basin by the middle of the Monongahela group, Pittsburgh formation, a plausible place to draw this boundary would seem to be at the base of the Benwood carbonate, Pittsburgh formation.
