Species Differences in Platelet Aggregation with Special Reference to Heparin as Anticoagulant

  • Chapter
Basic Aspects of Blood Trauma

Abstract

Thromboembolic events represent the most serious complications in the use of artificial internal organs (AIO), especially in those employed in the cardiovascular system (FORBES and PRENTICE, 1978). It seems evident, that the occurrence of thromboembolism is not only dependent upon the primary process of a monolayered platelet adhesion to foreign surfaces, but also on the further growth of mural thrombi, caused by secondary platelet aggregation. The growth of such mural thrombi is a conditio sine qua non for the formation of emboli.
