Natural and Induced Sediment Rehabilitation in Hypertrophic Lakes

Part of the Developments in Hydrobiology book series (DIHY, volume 2)

Abstract

The mechanisms of rehabilitation in Swedish lake recipients are to a large extent coupled to the structure and function of the sediments. Internal recycling of nutrients proved to be related to the amount and quality of organic matter deposited at the sediment surface, the availability of suitable electron acceptors and the intensity of microbial decomposition. Nitrogen metabolism and removal due to simultaneous nitrification and denitrification are interlinked with phosphorus recycling from the sediments.
