Abstract
The term Exudative Senile Maculopathy (ESM) has been applied to macular lesions expressed in a serous or hemorrhagic detachment of the RPE, with or without sensory retina elevation, often the result of subretinal neovascularization (SRNV). The etiology of this entity remains obscure, although many causal factors have been advocated. The modern approach to the treatment of this disease is photocoagulation with argon laser of the SRNV. This treatment is often of little benefit to the patient. One limiting factor appears to be the absorption of this type of wave length by blood impregnated nerve fibers and the resulting damage to this important layer.
