Summary

Characters for the specific identification of hydropsychid larvae from the Ivory Coast are given for the following genera: Cheumatopsyche, Polymorphanisus, Aethaloptera, Amphipsyche, Protomacronema, Macronema, Leptonema. Especially the genus Cheumatopsyche is represented by different morphological groups and a systematic revision of this genus seems to be necessary in the future.

In the N’Zi River, a temporary running water habitat during the study period, the population dynamics of three Cheumatopsyche spp. and Aethaloptera dispar were followed over 15 months. Densities and life cycles of the species were influenced by the discharge pattern. Undoubtedly their larval lives lasted longer than is generally assumed for insects of tropical rivers, and probably only 2 or 3 generations per year occurred.
