Abstract

X-ray spectroscopy has played a crucial role in the study of clusters of galaxies, possibly more so than in any other area. In one stroke, the detection of iron line emission from clusters by Mitchell et al. (1976) and Serlemitsos et al. (1977) showed that the dominant X-ray emission mechanism is thermal bremsstrahlung and that the intracluster gas is enriched with heavy elements — since the iron line strengths imply near-solar abundances.
