Kinetics of Intestinal Antibody Development in Calves after Infection with Bovine Rotavirus

Antibodies were demonstrated in the small intestine, in faecal material, and in serum from calves which had been infected with different strains of bovine rotavirus at 6–9 days of age.
Antibodies were first detected in the jejunum 2–12 days post infection. Two to thirteen days later rotavirus antibodies appeared in the faeces. Serum antibodies were detected between 22 and 38 days after oral infection.
Antibodies were demonstrable in the faeces for up to 65 days post infection. Most antibodies found in the small intestine or faeces were shown to be of the IgG1 class as demonstrated by immunoelectrophoresis, significant amounts of IgA were also present.
