Abstract
Recent years have seen a vast improvement in the care of critically ill patients. Aggressive initial resuscitation, early and appropriate surgical intervention and the availability of support systems have all contributed to an improvement in early survival. However, many patients ultimately succumb to overwhelming infection, despite the use of ‘appropriate’ antibiotics. This chapter will review aspects of clinical immunology relevant to a general ICU, particularly in regard to immunodeficiency syndromes and their impact on host defences.
