Abstract
Atmospheric water stress applied to greening barley seedlings by low relative humidity of the ambient air, impairs chloroplast development. This is first illustrated in the kinetics of protein and chlorophyll synthesis. There are also significant effects on the photochemical activities. An explanation for these effects is proposed in terms of the efficiency of molecular assembly and energy transfer in the photosystems. Changes are also observed in the ultrastructure of plastids greening in plants under atmosphe ric water stress. These changes are discussed in relation to similar effects, known to occur in other plants in normal or in stress conditions.
