Adherence of Normal Flora to Mucosal Surfaces

Abstract

Micro-organisms of many genera and species have been found associating closely with epithelial surfaces of mucous membranes in various areas of the bodies of animals of numerous types including man (Gibbons and Van Houte, 1975; Jones, 1977; Savage, 1977a). Some of these microbial types are known to adhere to substances on or in the mucosal epithelia with which they associate. In this chapter, I discuss some such micro-organisms confining the discussion to micro-organisms of the ‘normal flora’ (see definition below) found in the gastro-intestinal tracts of man, some other mammals and certain birds. Micro-organisms of the normal flora are known to adhere to mucosal surfaces in the buccal cavity of humans (Gibbons and Van Houte, 1975) and undoubtedly adhere to such surfaces in the upper respiratory (Jones, 1977; Aly et al, 1977) and urogenital (Davis et al, 1977a; Larson et al, 1978) tracts of humans and other higher animals, and the gastro-intestinal tracts of lower animals of several types (Breznak and Pankratz, 1977; Tannock and Savage, 1974a). In most cases, however, little is known in detail about the phenomena, except for those involving organisms in the buccal cavity (Gibbons and Van Houte, 1975). Some of these are discussed elsewhere in this volume (Gibbons, Chapter 4; Slade, Chapter 5).
