Flames Containing Nitrogen, Halogens, Sulphur and Inorganic Substances
Abstract
Although the main applications of flame spectroscopy to combustion studies are concerned with organic fuels, there are a number of examples where the spectra of other flames are of real interest. Flames of special high-energy fuels for propulsion systems have been studied in recent years. The effects of various additives which promote or inhibit combustion of organic fuels have also been studied spectroscopically, and recently there has been emphasis on pollution problems such as the mechanism of formation of oxides of nitrogen and sulphur. The interest tends to shift, from time to time, from one type of flame to another, and in this chapter I have tried to give some basic information on the spectra of a considerable variety of unusual flames.
