Abstract

For a long time enucleation of the eye has been the usual treatment for choroidal melanomas as surgical excision of the tumour was only possible by removing the whole eye, which was carried out as soon as the diagnosis had been established. Treatment was only omitted in old or ill patients with a limited life span or when the tumour was located in the only useful eye of the patient.
