Control of insect pests with benzoylphenyl ureas

  • Chapter
Chitin and Benzoylphenyl Ureas

Part of the book series: Series Entomologica ((SENT,volume 38))

Abstract

The introduction of chlorinated hydrocarbons, carbamates and organophosphates has revolutionized agricultural production by severely curbing the losses due to insects. Insect vectors that carry human and animal pathogens have been kept well under control with the use of these broad-spectrum, contact neurotixins. The long term effects of such wonder compounds on the environment became apparent when repeated large- scale applications resulted in visible effects and were dramatically brought into focus by the publication of Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring” (1962). There began an active search for environmentally safe methods of pest control centered mainly around biological control agents such as Bacillus thuringiensis preparations, nuclear polyhedrosis viruses, Entomopathogenic fungi, Entomogenous nematodes and parasites. Along with these methods emerged genetic approaches such as sterile male release and physiological approaches like pheromones and insect hormone analogs or insect growth regulators.
