Non-genetic Causes of Visual Impairment in Early Childhood
Chapter
Abstract
It is by no means easy to analyse the relative importance of the different causes of visual handicap in children.
- 1.
The retrospective diagnosis of prenatal disease may sometimes be extremely difficult especially when the child is first seen at the age of 1 or 2 years.
- 2.
Extensive and somtimes repeated familial examinations may be need to exclude a possible genetic cause. The penetrance of the gene may be variable and the clinician must be aware of the different modes of presentation of a given disease.
- 3.
Some acquired diseases are phenocopies of know hereditary diseases.
- 4.
The prevalence of non-genetic versus genetic disease may markedly vary in different periods and different parts of the world.
- 5.
They may also be differences when comparing mentally normal with mentally handicapped children.
