The Large-Scale Motion of the ISM and the Interaction with the System of Stars
Abstract
An equation is derived describing the large-scale motion of the interstellar gas in the presence of small-scale fluctuations, which are considered to be due to the gravitational interactions of the ISM with the system of stars. We discuss in some detail the friction term describing the momentum transfer between the interstellar gas and the system of stars due to small-scale fluctuations. This term is non-zero only if the fluctuation field is anisotropic and if there are phase differences between the density fluctuations of the gas and the potential fluctuations due to the stars. The importance of dissipative processes and of chemical reactions in this context is pointed out.
