Abstract

At the beginning of this century, the subfamily Hispinae of the family Chrysomelidae consisted of 14 tribes, 51 genera and 837 species. Many of the species are pantropical and occur in four continents, principally in Asia. However, with many South American species not then described, this figure has now been greatly exceeded and should probably be 145 genera and some 3000 species.
