Management as the Symbolisation of Ethical Values
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to provide an understanding of ethical decision-making in organisations which is important to the development of organisational science. Ethical issues are ever present in uncertain conditions where multiple stakeholders, interests, and values are in conflict and laws are unclear (Trevino, 1986). Managers engage in discretionary decision-making behaviour affecting the lives and well-being of others. Not only do businesses act - they act rationally, according to a rational decision-making procedure. These rational actions affect people. Hence their actions can be evaluated from a moral point of view. Managerial decisions and acts can have important social consequences, in the realms of health, safety, welfare of consumers, employees and the community. Managers and corporations are involved in ethical decision-making.
