Growth Factor Synthesis By a Human Teratocarcinoma Cell Line: Implications for Autocrine Growth in the Human Embryo?

  • Chapter
Activation of Hormone and Growth Factor Receptors

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 295))

Abstract

Little is known about how growth and differentiation is regulated in the early mammalian embryo. Since the fetus is secluded in the womb, it is not readily available for physical examination, and whilst much information has been gained about endocrine hormone physiology by fetal cannulation in larger mammals such as sheep (Glucksman 1986), this method is for obvious reasons not usable in humans. Furthermore, it would give us no information about the production and utilisation of peptide growth factors in fetal tissues, which are by their nature locally produced and active, and in most cases are only systemically measurable in abnormal situations such as wound healing.
