Abstract

Academies of Science, from their earliest beginnings, have played major roles in each of their countries and for humankind in general. Each has had specific goals, and from time to time, each has enjoyed the respect and support of its citizens and governments. Nevertheless, in response to present worldwide structural changes, it is not surprising to find that Academies in many countries are re-examining their roles and responsibilities.
