Computer-assisted Taxonomy of Filamentous Microfungi

  • P. D. Bridge

Abstract

Numerical taxonomy has been widely used in microbiology to aid in the classification and characterisation of bacteria and yeasts, and computer-assisted identification of such organisms has become routine. Numerical taxonomic procedures may also be applicable to the study of filamentous microfungi particularly in areas where the existing taxonomy is not clear. Information gained from taxonomic studies can enhance culture collection databases and can be useful in strain typing. Some numerical taxonomy methods are briefly reviewed and illustrated with data from the genus Penicillium.
