Circuit and Packet Networks

Abstract

Earlier parts of this book have discussed the detailed design of digital communication links, and associated synchronization techniques that are necessary to give access to a multiplicity of users. We now attempt to place this material in perspective by describing how entire communication networks can be built on on this foundation. We have two purposes in mind: to give the reader an overview, and to relate network design to the topics that have been covered in this book. For lack of space, this material is primarily descriptive in nature, and the reader is referred to other books on network design for a more comprehensive treatment.
