An Instrumentation System for CSA and Similar Architectures
This paper describes the Communications System Architecture (CSA) Instrumentation Machine (IM) developed within the CSA project. Although produced primarily for CSA the IM is intended to be a more general machine which can be configured by the architect or designer to demonstrate behaviour of other similar architectures.
The internal model of the system being instrumented is built up in the form of a hierarchical graph from a sequence of events emanating from the system. The modeller has control over the effects of these events upon the model being constructed, defining its structure in terms of nodes, representing objects, and arcs representing for example communications between them, or other more abstract relationships. Modellers then graphically display parts of the system according to their interests.
The use of the IM within, and impact on, CSA are explored giving some indications of the requirements to be met by other architectures before they too could be instrumented. Possible development paths are explored.
