Abstract

ELASTOLT.M.* was developed by GTA with the assistance of BASF. It is manufactured in the form of a white powder with particle sizes between 100 μm and 1000 μm. The powder contains about 50% by weight of Polyiso-butylene (PIB) of extremely high molar mass (Mw ≈ 6·106 g/mol). PIB is a non-toxic polymer that only consists of carbon and hydrogen atoms. The PIB-component is soluble in oil. When dissolved the macromolecules give rise to a distinct viscoelasticity as well as to a drastic increase in the elongational viscosity of the solution even at PIB concentrations of only a few 100 ppm. These properties make ELASTOLT.M. a very interesting oil spill treating agent [1]. In this work we report on laboratory tests as well as field tests with ELASTOLT.M. applied to 13 different types of oil at various concentrations [2].
