Helminth community of mammalian hosts: concepts at the infracommunity, component and compound community levels

Abstract

The literature on biotic and abiotic factors affecting transmission, survival and reproduction of helminths in domestic animals and humans, and on helminth surveys of wild mammals, are legion. However, of the examples cited in the review on communities of parasites by Holmes and Price (1986), few are drawn from studies on the helminths of mammals. This is in contrast to some other vertebrate groups discussed in this book, especially fish and birds. In this chapter, I will use information from the literature, examples taken from my own research and data provided by colleagues, to present views on the community ecology of helminths in mammals. I will attempt to present this in the context of our present understanding of certain concepts of parasite ecology at the infracommunity, component and compound community levels.
