The Use of Viscometers as Mimics of Flow Processes
This paper concerns the development of guidelines for routine industrial viscosity and thixotropic measurement. It describes some practical problems encountered. Put simply, it does not seem possible to specify simple thixotropic models and reduce measurement to the determination of material parameters. For dense suspensions, the viscosity is so bound up with the concentration profile developed in viscometers that it is not currently possible to separate them. These problems are of a fundamental nature and require research still. In routine measurement, it is suggested that, for the results to be relevant and useful, viscometers should be used to simulate flow processes and the conditions of testing should closely match those of the application situation.
