Flow of Polymer Solutions Through Beds of Solid Particles

Abstract

On the basis of analysis of an extensive set of experimental data, the possibility of exploitation of a modified capillary model of the bed is presented for description of a flow of polymer solutions through beds of solid particles.

The model gives good results for pressure drop prediction of pure viscous and weakly elastic liquids flowing through fixed beds of spherical and nonspherical particles.

In contrast to the flow through fixed beds, the capillary model cannot be used for reliable prediction of expansion of beds fluidized with polymer solutions in creeping flow region. In this caset a limited expansion of the beds was observed.
