Experimental Results on Moment Redistribution in Reinforced Concrete Continuous Beams

Abstract

An experimental investigation of moment redistribution in hyperstatic rein-forced concrete beams is described. The experimental equipment, using a mechanical worm gear actuator, allows strain controlled tests in order to determine the moment-curvature relationship, including the range of large curvatures from the first yield up to nearly the ultimate load. A relatively simplified calculation model, based on the average reduction of the bending stiffness in cracked zones is described. The tension stiffening effect is also taken into account.

In the light of these assumptions the present work develops a numerical analysis for the evaluation of moment redistribution in reinforced concrete continuous beams in the cracked regime, and also presents a parametric investigation checked against experimental results which confirm the validity of the analytical model outlined.
