Perspectives of Local Probe Methods

Abstract

Over the past years a variety of local probe methods developed from scanning tunneling microscopy, using various interactions between probe and object. These methods play a central role in advancing our understanding of individual functional units of nanometer dimensions and our capabilities of their manipulation and control. First attempts to work with biological macromolecules while in their functional state are presented.
