Theoretical Maps of CMB Anisotropies
Patterns of the fluctuations in the temperature of the CMB that arise in various theoretical models of structure formation are used to illustrate the potential richness of the CMB sky on all scales: from arcseconds, for primeval dust emission from dwarf galaxies; to arcminutes, for Compton cooling anisotropics from hot gas in groups and clusters; through tens of arcminutes to a few degrees, where primary anisotropics from linear gas flows and photon bunching arise; to tens of degrees and radians where the scale invariant nature of fluctuations generated during inflation may be discovered. Across this broad range the experiments are getting dangerously close to the levels predicted for favourite theories. The casualty rate is increasing and it may soon become an epidemic. A discovery must be near to change the prognosis.
