Agricultural Labor and Technological Change in Jordan

Abstract

Only 9% of Jordan receives more than 200 mm of rainfall (Table 1; Figure 1) and is therefore potential agricultural land (NPC 1976). But these areas are generally mountainous and rocky. In the south especially, rainfall and the resulting productivity are highly variable (Qasem and Mitchell 1986; Barham 1979). Of the 364,000 ha of total cultivable land only 10% is irrigated (DOS 1985).
