Abstract

Observations of SN 1987A, with particular emphasis on the evidence for a circumstellar medium around the supernova are reviewed. Models of the observations are discussed. In particular, it is shown that narrow emission lines in the UV and optical can be used to put constraints on the presupernova evolution, as well as the unobserved soft X-ray burst occurring a few hours after the core collapse.
