Light/Dark-Regulation of C4-Photosynthesis Enzymes by Reversible Phosphorylation

Abstract

This paper will present a brief overview of our ongoing research related to the light/dark-regulation of two maize mesophyll-cell enzymes by reversible covalent modification, chloroplastic pyruvate, Pi dikinase (PPDK) and cytoplasmic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC). The reversible light-activation of both of these key C4-photosynthesis enzymes is unique among the photoregulated carbon-fixation enzymes investigated in detail in that it involves the reversible phosphorylation of the two target proteins.
