Photophysics and Photobiology of the Carotenoid Singlet State

Abstract

Carotenoids have two important functions in photosynthetic light-harvesting systems. One function is to protect the organism from harmful singlet oxygen. The second is to absorbe light in the blue part of the solar spectrum and transfer the excitation energy to chlorophyll or bacteriochlorophyll chromophores. For both biological processes an understanding of the photophysics of carotenoids is of primary importance.
