The Use of Light Pulses to Investigate the Relaxation in the Dark of Chlorophyll Fluorescence Quenching in Barley Leaves

Abstract

Chlorophyll fluorescence gives a direct measure of the level of energisation of a photosynthetic pigment system; a reduction in chlorophyll excitation due to an increase in utilisation via photochemistry or dissipation of energy as heat is accompanied by quenching of the fluorescence yield. Accurate interpretation of fluorescence quenching data requires that the contributions to quenching made by photochemistry (qQ) and other, non-photochemical processes (qNP) be quantified.
