Extinction and Dust Column Density in Spiral Disks from FIR vs. UV-Optical Comparison

Abstract

A new method has been proposed by us (Xu & Buat 1995; Xu & Helou 1996) to constrain the extinction and the dust column density in spiral disks through comparisons between the FIR emission (dust re-radiation) and the UV and optical emission (escaped starlight). It differs from other similar methods (e. g. Disney et al. 1989) by including explicitly the vacuum UV data, which became available only recently, into the solution of the problem.
