Large-Eddy SImulation of Aircraft Exhaust Plumes in the Free Atmosphere
Aircraft emissions at cruising altitudes influence the physical and chemical state of the atmosphere and may therefore contribute to a possible global or regional climate change (Schumann, 1994; WMO, 1995). It is crucial for the quantitative understanding of the influence of aircraft emissions on the state of the atmosphere to determine how they get dispersed in space and time. This is essential because chemical and microphysical processes in the atmosphere often evolve nonlinearly and obey similar timescales as the mixing motions.
