Production of fertile transgenic wheat by microprojectile bombardment
The development of plant transformation techniques during the past decade has made it possible to improve plants by introduction of cloned genes. For most dicotyledonous species, the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system can be used to generate many transformants while for most of the monocotyledonous species, this transformation system still needs to be improved. However, in the last two years two reports were published describing the regeneration of transgenic fertile rice by using Agrobacterium tumefaciens as vector [4, 11]. Although this is a very recent development, the future prospects also for other cereals like maize, wheat and barley will surely be investigated in the near future. Of the various approaches to gene transfer, three transformation methods have led predominantly to the production of transgenic plants:
protoplast based direct gene transfer,
microprojectile-mediated gene transfer.
