Suppressive effect of Geranium pratense L. on potato common scab and identification of the effective compound

Abstract

The possibility to control potato common scab with Geranium pratense which has antimicrobial activity in the roots, was investigated. Incidence of the disease decreased by application of roots or methanol extracts from G. pratense roots to the soil, and when G. pratense was mix-cropped with potato. Geraniin was identified as the major antimicrobial substance in the root of G. pratense acting against the pathogen, Streptomyces scabies, and accounted for as much as 15% of root dry weight. These findings suggest the usefulness of G. pratense and geraniin for biological control of potato common scab.
