National Affairs

Chapter
Part of the American Jewish Year Book book series (AJYB, volume 109-112)

Abstract

The recent past has been replete with dramatic events involving the Jewish community in national affairs. The political arena was dominated by partisan politics and shocked by the Arizona shootings, which seriously injured US Representative Gabrielle Gifford, and killed six others. The international arena focused on US-Israel relations and the stridency in the Jewish community about AIPAC and JStreet, along with conflicts at the UN over the Middle East, including Israel-Palestinian relations, the Arab Spring, exacerbated by attempts to delegitimize Israel and contain Iran. The domestic arena was riveted on movements for change, e.g., the “Tea Party” and “Occupy Wall Street,” along with the debate over marriage for same sex couples, immigration and interfaith relations, among others.
