Methods to Assess Vascular Permeability During Angiogenic Processes

Chapter

Abstract

Angiogenesis is a multi-faceted process that is, in part, reliant on dynamic regulation of the endothelium that lines the bodies vasculature. Here we have detailed angiogenic factors VEGF, angiopoietin 1 and 2, sphingosine 1-Phosphate (S1P), and hepatocyte growth factor, all of which act, in part, via alterations of endothelial barrier function. As these alterations in endothelial integrity provide insight into angiogenic responses, we further specify detailed protocols that may be used in its study. These include Transwell Albumin clearance, Evans Blue Albumin Permeability assays, and Trans-endothelial Electrical Resistance.
