307 Towards Vibrational Models
A thermodynamic formalism is discussed, which, in a self-consistent way, enables the derivation of thermodynamic properties, the calculation of the shear modulus (→308), and the calculation of phase diagrams, for conditions of pressure and temperature that prevail in the interior of the earth. That formalism is based on the assumption that the Helmholtz energy of an insulator material can be taken as the sum of two contributions, one of them being related to the static lattice and the other to lattice vibrations. The vibrational models by Einstein and Debye are applied to aluminium. The model introduced by Kieffer is applied to the forsterite form of Mg2SiO4.
