Abstract

This chapter presents food projections to 2030 of the Mediterranean countries in the context of possible developments in world cereal trade2. This first section gives a brief review of the food consumption in the different countries and the dependence of such consumption and the overall agriculture on international trade. Section 2 presents projections to 2030 and section 3 discusses briefly the land and water endowments of the countries. The final section draws some conclusions.

This chapter is largely based on the author’s work for Alexandratos [1] FAO [21] and Bruinsma [13]. The views expressed are the author’s and do not express those of FAO. All historical data are from FAO: Faostat data base (http://faostat.fao.org) and the projections are from the working files for the preparation of FAO [12] and Bruinsma [13] unless otherwise indicated
